This report analyzed 11 schools in Massachusetts to see which ones were the most popular doctor's degree programs for computer science students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our analysis found Massachusetts Institute of Technology to be the most popular school for computer science students who want to pursue a doctor’s degree in Massachusetts. This fairly large private not-for-profit school is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and it awarded 64 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 19% were women.
Interested in an online degree? Then you definitely want to check out MIT. Every graduate student at the school took at least one class online.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Massachusetts Amherst. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Most Popular Computer Science Doctor’s Degree Schools in Massachusetts list. University of Massachusetts Amherst is a large public school located in Amherst, Massachusetts that handed out 16 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.

If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Harvard does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 96% took at least some of their classes online.
A rank of #5 on this year’s list means University of Massachusetts - Lowell is a great place for computer science students working on their doctor’s degree. Located in Lowell, Massachusetts, the fairly large public school handed out 9 doctor’s degree awards in 2020-2021.
Around 33% of those degree recipients were women.
UMass Lowell does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. In 2019-2020 about 99% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Boston University came in at #6 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Computer Science Doctor’s Degree Schools in Massachusetts ranking. Boston, Massachusetts is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out doctor’s degrees to 8 students in 2020-2021.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute landed the #8 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular doctor’s degree computer science programs. Worcester, Massachusetts is the setting for this medium-sized institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out doctor’s degrees to 6 students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 50% were women.
WPI does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. In 2019-2020 about 37% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
University of Massachusetts - Boston came in at #9 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Computer Science Doctor’s Degree Schools in Massachusetts ranking. Boston, Massachusetts is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out doctor’s degrees to 5 students in 2020-2021.
Around 20% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that UMass Boston does offer online graduate classes in some areas. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 100% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
Simmons University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for computer science students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #10 on the list. Simmons is a medium-sized private not-for-profit school situated in Boston, Massachusetts. It awarded 2 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Since the graduate programs at Simmons are primarily online school, so it is a great choice for returning adults and students who work full time.
Brandeis University came in at #10 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Computer Science Doctor’s Degree Schools in Massachusetts ranking. Brandeis is located in Waltham, Massachusetts and has a medium-sized student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 2 doctor’s degrees to qualified students.
Around 50% of those degree recipients were women.
